Mary Good, Ph.D., ALAR
Steering Committee member, Founding Principal Investigator of ALAR,
and Dean of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) Donaghey
College of Information Science and Systems Engineering (CyberCollege)
has a distinguished career and awards and honors too numerous to list.
Before returning to her home state of Arkansas, she held many high-level
positions in academia, industry, and government, including President
of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
Dr. Good was the first female winner of the prestigious AAAS Philip Hogue Abelson prize for outstanding achievements in education, research and development, management, and public service. In addition to over 21 honorary degrees, she has received the country’s top awards, including the National Science Foundation Distinguished Service Medal, the esteemed American Chemical Society Priestly Medal, and most recently, the National Science Board’s 2004 Vannevar Bush Award for her lifelong contributions to research, science, and technology.
During the terms of Presidents Carter and Reagan, Dr. Good was appointed to the National Science Board and chaired it from 1988-1991. President George H. Bush appointed her to the President’s Council of Advisors for Science and Technology, and she was the Under Secretary for Technology in the US Department of Commerce and Technology during President Clinton’s first term. She has also served on the board of directors of five major technology companies - Biogen, a successful biotech company in Cambridge, MA.; IDEXX Laboratories in Westbrook, ME; Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corp. in Oak Ridge, TN.; Whatman PLC in England; and Acxiom Corporation in Little Rock, AR.
After 25 years of teaching and conducting research at Louisiana State University, she served as senior vice president of technology at Allied Signal Inc., one of the major high-tech companies in the country. She is the founding Dean of the UALR CyberCollege and founding member of the Acxiom Laboratory for Applied Research. She is also a managing member of Venture Capitol Investors, LLC, an “angel” investor group in Central Arkansas, formed to take advantage of “home grown” technology to build viable, profitable, technology-based businesses in Arkansas.

Top 100 Women, D. Allan Bromley, former science adviser for the George
H. Bush administration and retired dean of Yale University's School
of Engineering, says, "Mary Good is one of the foremost female
scientists in the United States. What makes her a strong leader,”
Bromley says, “Is that she has touched every aspect of science
and technology, from academia to business to government, serving in
two administrations and as chairman of the National Science Board.”
He further states, “I really do consider her one of the truly
outstanding scientists of our time, not only in what she has accomplished
in her science but also for what she has contributed to the good of
the nation."
